1. Information We Do Not Collect
FreeExamTimer is hosted as a static web application. We do not require you to provide your name, email address, school affiliation, student rosters, or any personally identifiable information (PII). When you type an exam title (e.g., "AP Chemistry Midterm") or configure candidate instructions, that information stays entirely in your device's memory. It is never transmitted across the network or stored on any server.
2. Local Storage Usage
To provide a seamless experience where your preferences are preserved between browser refreshes, we utilize your browser's standard localStorage mechanism. The items saved include:
- Theme choice (
fet-theme): Saves your selected display mode (Dark or Light mode). - Timer state & preferences (
fet-config-v1): Saves duration, warning intervals (e.g. 15m, 5m), sound choices, and whether the anxiety-reduction mode (hidden seconds) is enabled.
This data never leaves your computer and can be purged at any time by clearing your browser cache or site data.
3. No Cookies, No Trackers, No Ads
We do not deploy third-party advertising networks, affiliate trackers, cross-site tracking scripts, or behavioural surveillance tools. You will never see third-party ads, pop-ups, or sponsor banners while running an examination.
4. Educational & Classroom Compliance (FERPA, COPPA, GDPR)
Because FreeExamTimer does not collect, process, or transmit candidate or student records, using this service in public or private educational institutions does not create student privacy exposure under:
- FERPA: (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act - US)
- COPPA: (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act - US)
- GDPR & UK GDPR: (General Data Protection Regulation - EU & UK)
- Australian Privacy Principles: (Privacy Act 1988)
5. Web Audio and Browser Permissions
All chimes, gongs, and audio alerts are generated locally in real-time through the HTML5 Web Audio API using synthesizer waveforms. No audio files are downloaded from external servers, and FreeExamTimer never requests microphone, camera, or location access. When you invoke Fullscreen or Wake Lock (preventing screen dimming), standard browser APIs are utilized without logging any telemetric data.
6. Updates and Inquiries
Should this policy change in the future (for example, if new client-side features are released), we will update the effective date at the top of this document. If you have questions regarding data security in your school or examination center, please reach out via our contact page.
